De thee wordt zelfs van een andere struik geplukt, de Aspalathus Linearis (familie van de vlinderstruik) die in Afrika groeit.
De bladeren worden geplukt, gestampt, nat gemaakt en in de zon te drogen gelegd (geoxideerd, dus gefermenteerd).
Er komt geen cafeïne in voor, de stof die andere theeën bitter kan maken bij lang trekken.

Aan de drank worden bijzondere eigenschappen toebedacht.
Het zou helpen tegen eczeem, acne, hooikoorts, astma, allergiën en maagklachten.
In Zuid-Afrika wordt rooibos gegeven aan baby’s die darmkrampen hebben.
De naam rooibos komt van Rood Bos en verwijst naar de ondergaande zon, schijnend op de struiken in Afrika.
